NaPoWriMo 2015 ~ A World Where Stars Die

Inspired by Anakin’s realization in Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith.

April 20, 2015 ~ A World Where Stars Die

I.

I live in a world where stars die,

You whisper with stricken eyes.

Yes,

Yes, you do.

We all live in a world where beauty burns out,

Where eternal emblems fail,

And death writes its power in the skies.

But listen, friend,

I am glad they die.

Glad, because this world is not my home.

Glad, because I don’t want the shadows of true glory

Tricking my soul into thinking they’re the real thing.

So you live in a world where the stars die?

Dance beneath them while they last

And when they turn to nothingness,

Whisper with courageous eyes,

I’m going to a world where the stars sing.

II.

I live in a world where stars die,

You whisper in confusion.

Yes,

Yes, you do.

We all live in a world where life is shattered,

And all we thought was stable fails

And darkness snatches up the light.

But listen, friend,

I am glad that they die.

Glad, because they explode into even bright light.

Glad, because their last gift is a rainbow in the darkness,

A legacy of prismatic light against the utter black.

So you live in a world where the stars die?

Marvel at their grandeur while they last,

And when they start to smolder,

Whisper with shining eyes,

I live in a world where death brings beauty.
