If you’re wondering where Fireside Fridays went, well, let me assure you that it’s still alive. However, I have a friend visiting, and I decided people were just a tad bit more important than blogs (that was sarcasm, by the way. People are infinitely more important.) Thanks for bearing with me! And now, another tag …
The lovely Victoria over at A Gathering of Dreams tagged me with the “Favorite Screen Characters Tag.” All this requires is listing your ten favorite screen characters (yes, only ten—it was agony to choose) and tagging ten more bloggers. These are in no particular order, and I limited myself to no more than two from any particular movie/series.
1. Bilbo ~ The Hobbit trilogy
Because Martin Freeman did such an impeccable job. Honestly, he brought Bilbo to life in a way no one else ever can. It’s extremely rare that movies live up to all that I imagined while reading a book, but Bilbo … he embodied everything I’d pictured in my mind.
2. Bard ~ The Hobbit trilogy
In the book, I always liked Bard, but I loved how Peter Jackson fleshed him out even more and gave him so much screen time. A family-oriented, altruistic protector, leader, and fighter—what’s more heroic than that?
3. Aragorn ~ The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Faramir fell a little short from the hero I admire in The Lord of the Rings books, but Aragorn was captured perfectly in the movies. He looks just right, speaks just right, moves just right—Viggo Mortensen truly became this Ranger and king, and he is one of the major factors behind the movies’ epicness.
4. Obi Wan Kenobi ~ Star Wars, the new trilogy
Ah, Obi Wan. He’s that model Jedi—brave, selfless, strong, devoted to the Light Side—and yet he’s not flat. Somehow, Lucas was able to portray him as relatable and even broken like the rest of us, despite his numerous perfections. His love for Anakin, even to the end, and yet his dedication to doing what was right, even though it brought personal agony, simultaneously break my heart and thrill it.
5. Yoda ~ Star Wars
Yoda just makes me smile—and stare in awe at his incredible lightsaber skills. Every time I see his tiny green body and hear his distinctive voice, I grin. I love seeing him fly around like a crazy miniature acrobat, and I love his wisdom and how he guides the other Jedi. And who could forget his now-famous way of speaking?
6. Captain America ~ Marvel
Captain America reminds me of Obi Wan in a way, that hero that everyone looks up to. I like how he shows that you can be a “good person” but also strong, courageous, and a talented fighter. I admire how he’s not ashamed of his morals or beliefs, and, of course, he fills me with patriotic pride.
7. Flynn Rider ~ Tangled
Because he is just so funny. I love Tangled for so many reasons, but Flynn is always at the top of the list. I also enjoy his transformation, as the independent rascal reveals his caring heart and desire for love.
8. Lumiere & Cogsworth ~ Beauty and the Beast
Okay, so this is technically two people (and they aren’t even people at one point). But I just love their interactions and the way their personalities complement each other. Their relationship is a fun, heartwarming portrayal of friendship.
9. Barbara (Spooner) Wilberforce ~ Amazing Grace
William Wilberforce is one of my historical heroes, but I love how Amazing Grace brings to life his wife as well. Watching her support him, bring out the best in him, and rekindle within him the fire for abolishing slavery in England is such a beautiful treat. Interestingly, she’s the only girl on this list, and I think it’s because there are few girls that combine strength with sweetness. Barbara, however, does it very well in this movie (and, from what I’ve read, in real life).
10. Robin Hood ~ Robin Hood, BBC’s TV series
Impeccable archer. Cunning mastermind. Altruistic defender of the poor. Devoted follower to his king. Need I say more?
The Taggees (what? That’s not a word?)
As always, 1) this is completely voluntary and 2) if you aren’t tagged, but want to do it, by all means, please do so! I hereby tag Lalaithiel, Brianna, Lakünstlerin, and Bri. Yes, it’s not ten, but when have I ever tagged the number of people specified? 😉
And that’s all for now, dear readers. Enjoy, and let me know what you think of my list—or what your list is—in the comments!
Awesome list! I agree with every one of these that I know . . . except Yoda. I don’t particularly like Yoda, especially in Episode 5. He’s cool, but he annoys me. Otherwise, though, excellent choices.

Thank you! Yeah, I can see that. He actually annoys me sometimes too. =P

Yay for Captain America! 😀 And Barbara! I haven’t seen that movie in forever, but it’s super awesome. 🙂 I especially like Ioan Gruffudd as Wilberforce. *cough* and as anything else. 😛

Hehe, yes! It is such an amazing movie, and I agree about Ioan as Wilberforce (I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything else). =D

Well, the only other thing I’ve seen him in is Hornblower. But that was enough. He’s officially awesome. 🙂

Nice choices! the first is by far the best! I don’t have much opinion on Captain America since I know nothing about him. This is interesting though! 😀

😀 I’ll probably have to qualify it.

Bilbo! Bard! Aragorn! Yoda and Captain America! You’ve got some great choices there. I did the same tag not too long ago, and though we didn’t pick the same characters, we do have two common movies (LOTR, The Hobbit) that made me cheer.
And Lumiere and Cogsworth. Gosh, I haven’t watched Beauty and the Beast in AGES!

Thank you! Oh, yay, another Lotr fan. 😉 I know, I just watched it again with my younger siblings, after about a ten-year gap. I hope never to go that long without watching Beauty and the Beats again. =P

Great choices! I love how you described Obi-wan — he has so many perfections, and yet he’s broken. I’ve never thought about it that way. I also love how you described Barbara as sweet yet strong. I think the world as well as literature needs more of that type of people. And I wish I had included Robin — *grins* If I could invite any number of fictional characters over to dinner, he would be one of them.

Thank you! Mm, yes, I agree. We do need more of those people in real life, too. Oh, yes, he would be a splendid choice. *beams*
