{Miscellaneous Mondays} 30 Song Challenge (3x Version)

I’m super excited today, dear readers, because this tagĀ is just so storming amazing.Ā  The wonderful Lalaithiel tagged me with thisĀ 30 Song Challenge (which she createdā€”isn’t that cool?), where you have to answer each question with the appropriate song. I love, love, love music, so I couldn’t wait to do this. Oh, and, aherm, I couldn’t just limit it to one song, so I picked up to three for each question. *sheepish grin* Are you ready for the awesomeness?

1. Your favorite song

Songs I’m obsessed with change often, but here are some that stay pretty constant:

Come Home (Jon Foreman) / Sound of Silence (Celtic Thunder) / To All the Poets (Andrew Peterson)

2. Your least favorite song

I don’t have a least favorite song, but I do really dislike Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) (Chris Tomlin). The whole “my chains are gone” part just ruins the song (which I otherwise love). I mean, “like a flood your mercy reigns”? How on earth does a flood reign? This conjures up images of a riverbank bowing before aĀ foam-crowned river. The lyrics embody everything I dislike about modern Christian music. *end of rant*

3. A song that makes you happy

You Don’t Know How Beautiful You Are (Jon Foreman) / O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus (Selah) / Don’t Give Up (You Are Loved) (Josh Groban)

4. A song that makes you sad

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables (Les Miserables) / Ā The Breaking of the Fellowship (Howard Shore) /Ā I Will Carry You (Audrey’s Song) (Selah)

5. A song that reminds you of someone

Letters from War (Mark Shultz) / Many Roads (Andrew Peterson) / Flawless (MercyMe)

6. A song that reminds you of somewhere

Off the Map (Mark Shultz)ā€”I couldn’t find a youtube video of this one; it’s from his debut instrumental album, Renaissance / This is Home (Switchfoot)

7. A song that reminds you of a certain event

Nothing Is Wasted (Jason Gray) / While I’m Waiting (John Waller) / The Shadow Proves the Sunshine (Switchfoot)

8. A song that you know all the words to

Basically all of these songs.Ā Some of the first that come to mind are:

Halo (Starset) / Do We Dare (Carolyn Arends) / What Did He Die For? (Twila Paris)

9. A song that you can dance to

Joy of the Lord (Rend Collective) / Praise You With the Dance (Casting Crowns)ā€”fitting, huh? / Brave (Sara Bareilles)

10. A song that makes you fall asleep

I’m taking this in a positive lightā€”as in, songs that are soothing and comforting, not boring:

Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach) / The Voice of Jesus (Andrew Peterson)

11. A song from your favorite band

At least it specifies “band,” so I can’t include artists, or else I’d never be able to pick.

Already There (Casting Crowns) / Hello, HurricaneĀ (Switchfoot) / Not Alone (RED)

12. A song from a band you hate

I don’t listen to bands that I hate. I can’t even think of a band I hate. xP

13. A song that is a guilty pleasure

Centuries (Fall Out Boy) because I don’t really agree with the worldview expressed in it, and it just doesn’t sound like a “good” song, but I really love it.

14. A song that no one would expect you to love

I’m not really sure what people expect me to loveā€”actually, that’d be a fun thing to put in the comments: Which songs on here surprised you? But if I had to guess:

Not Gonna Die (Skillet)Ā / Cassie (Flyleaf) /Ā Into the Fire (Bruce Springsteen)

15. A song that describes you

I actually want to do a separate post on this sometimeā€”songs (and maybe even books and other media) that describe me. There are so many songs that fit me well. For now, here’s three:

Reaching (Carolyn Arends) / Runner (Twila Paris) / Penholder (Flyleaf)

16. A song that you used to love but now hate

I don’t hate any songs, but some that I’ve overdone are:

Jubilee (Michael Card) / Lamb of God (Rebecca St. James) / You Are More (Tenth Avenue North)

17. A song that you hear often on the radio

I don’t really listen to the radio that much, but:

Greater (MercyMe) / Roar (Katy Perry)ā€”other people put this on at the gym; I don’t choose to listen to this myself. Just a disclaimer.

18. A song that you wish you heard on the radio

We Will Survive (Andrew Peterson) / I AmĀ (Theocracy)ā€”or any Theocracy song, really / Take This City (Everfound)

19. A song from your favorite album

Come Back Soon (Light for the Lost Boy, Andrew Peterson) / Best is Yet to Come (Until We Have Faces, RED) / Stars (Les Miserables)ā€”I’m assuming musicals count

20. A song that you listen to when youā€™re angry

Let It Burn (RED) / This Means War (Petra) /BraveĀ (Josh Groban)

21. A song that you listen to when youā€™re happy

Your Love is Enough (Jon Foreman) / Dream for You (Casting Crowns) / In The Girl There’s a Room (Sara Groves)

22. A song that you listen to when youā€™re sad

Hold Me Now (RED) / After All These Tears (Andrew Peterson) / Oh My Dear (Tenth Avenue North)

23. A song that you want to play at your wedding

Dancing in the Minefields (Andrew Peterson)

I seriously cannot think of anything else. Huh.

24. A song that you want to play at your funeral

Death Be Not Proud (Attalus) / Into the West (Annie Lennox) / Lay Me Down (Andrew Peterson)

25. A song that makes you laugh

Alien Conspiracy (The Cheese Song) (Andrew Peterson) /Ā The Crayon Song Gets Ruined (Studio C)ā€”does that count? / Mother Knows Best (Tangled)

26. A song that you can play on an instrument

Liebestraum (Franz Liszt) / Gollum’s Song (Emiliana Torrini) / In Christ Alone (Keith Getty & Stuart Townend)

27. A song that you wish you could play

Bring Him Home (Les Miserables) / Star Wars Main Theme (John Williams) / Let It Go (Disney’s “Frozen”) Vivaldi’s Winter (ThePianoGuys)

28. A song in a foreign language that you like

The first two are some of my absolute favorite songs ever:

Now We Are Free (Gladiator soundtrackā€”made-up language)ā€”I linked to my favorite cover of it / Nessun Dorma (Pucciniā€”Italian) / Baba Yetu (Peter Hollens feat. Malukahā€”Swahili)

29. A song from your childhood

Imagine (Amy Grant) / Oh Draw Me Lord (Selah)ā€”my brothers and I used to think they were singing “Oh, joey, Lord”

30. Your favorite song at this time last year

Och. That’s hard to remember. If I could guess:

Carry the Fire (Andrew Peterson) / Arise (Flyleaf)Ā / Embers (Owl City)Ā Ā

Now, for tagging: Sara Letourneau, Gabrielle, A. Olsen, Rachel Elizabeth, and Grace. As always, it’s totally optional, and any else who would like to may snag the tagā€”just make sure you link back to me so I can see your choices!

Before you go:Ā Which of these choices surprised you? Do you know/agree with any of these choices? Do you have any questions about them? Let’s chat!Ā

  1. This was a fun read! Glad to know I’m not alone in disliking what modern music has done to beautiful Christian songs. I especially dislike the new version of “In Christ Alone”–the singer just sounds so darned unenthusiastic! It makes me sad. But yeah, the “My Chains Are Gone” song is not exactly pleasant either. Although, I might be able to help make sense of the “How does a flood reign?” question. One time we sang that song at my church and the lyrics on the screen thingy said “like a flood Your mercy RAINS.” Like, it rained mercy really hard, and now there’s a flood? IDK, it helps a little :/

    1. Haha, thank you! Ahhh, I see. Maybe the lyrics I’ve seen were incorrect. It still doesn’t make a ton of sense, but more than the “reigns” option. ;D

First of all, not much surprised me, since I know your musical tastes pretty well, though I wasnā€™t expecting ā€œAmazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone).ā€ I totally understand your feelings about it, though. I always mix up the lyrics and accidentally sing else (which I canā€™t remember at the moment because Iā€™ve got the right lyrics in my head xD).
I heartily approve of your answers to #9. Brave is such a fun dancing song. =D With those answers, do you mean youā€™ve got choreographed dances to them, or theyā€™re just danceable songs?
ALSO OH MY STORMS ā€œDeath Be Not Proudā€ would be the most powerful song ever to play at your funeral. o_o

    1. *grins* Thanks so much for tagging me!
Yeah, I figured you wouldn’t be too surprised. xP Haha, that’s funny.
Yes, it is. No, just danceableā€”I haven’t officially choreographed dances to anything, although I’d love to try that someday.
I KNOW RIGHT. It gives me shivers just thinking about it.

  7. Thanks for tagging me! I have gotten behind on some tags, though, so I probably won’t get to it for several weeks. Sorry. By the way, I love your Les Mis choices! My sister and I love belting out the ABC Cafe in the car (we have allotted all the parts: I sing Enjolras and Grantaire and she sings Marius, Gavroche, and most of the other boys.) I’m excited to do that tag, and I’m sure you’ll recognize most of the songs šŸ˜›

    1. You’re welcome, and don’t worry about it! I can completely understand. In fact, I know there are some tags that I’ve just let slip by because I haven’t had time. And thank you! Hehe, that’s great. My dad and I are the only ones in the family who like it, so we usually end up singing them loudly to be obnoxious to everyone else. xD Ooh, I can’t wait to what they are! =D

  11. Oh, you tagged me! XD This post grabbed my interest anyways, because I love love LOVE music, so I definitely accept your challenge. (Though I’m not quite sure when I’ll get around to it…)

I loved seeing the LOTR, Josh Groban, and Les Mis songs, btw. Do you have Josh’s new album “Stages”? He covers two Les Mis songs on there, “Bring Him Home” and “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” – two songs you mentioned here, actually. šŸ˜‰

    1. I did! I can’t wait to see your answers, but don’t worry about how long it takes. I totally understand business. =)

I don’t, actually, although I’ve heard his version of “Bring Him Home” on Youtube. So amazing. And I must say thank you, because you introduced me to “Don’t Give Up (You Are Loved).” It’s one of my favorites now. ā¤ I'll have to check out the rest of "Stages," though, so thanks for letting me know!
