Why These Future Fears

This has been a common theme among my friends and I: thinking about and, primarily, dreading the future. So many important decisions are coming up, so many huge unknowns, and if that’s all you focus on, it can strangle all your joy. It’s done that for me, at least. So this poem is my response to all our fear—to all my fear. It’s written to others, but really, it was written to myself.

pierlakefuture

why are you all so concerned

about the future?

why are your gazes stuck there,

in the fear and unknown?

why aren’t you just looking around

at the right now

at the what is

at all these gifts?

i just don’t understand—

why sacrifice the surety of what is happening now

for the instability of what may be?

can someone help explain—

why blind yourself to the beauty and blessing of now

by straining to see false future fears?

please, think about it—

why not rejoice in the fact that you’re alive now

instead of fearing whether you will be then?

you forget His presence and His promises

and all you remember

is a lie

He won’t provide

I’ll be alone

I won’t survive

I can’t get home

truth, though …

I will be with you

to the end of the age

I will lift you

on wings through the cage

that could set you free

  1. This is a great poem. With my senior year coming up there’s a lot of talk about college and credits and scholarships, and it’s really easy to focus on that and worry about it sometimes. This is such a good reminder of where our focus should be.
