reaching out (to bridge an ocean)

When I reach out for you

The first fumbling stretch,

The tiniest twitch of a finger

As if to bridge a vast ocean

Or pierce the atmosphere and extend into the cosmos,

Like it would take light years just to reach your outer rim—

What a surprise to make that miniscule move

And brush against you,

My trembling fingertips against your scarred palm,

You, right here,

Your hand stretched out to me since the day it formed me,

Your arm, the bridge over the endless void between us,

Shrinking space like an inverse red shift

To carry me home to your heart

Less than one breath away—

You, always the first to reach out for me

  1. My little astronomy-loving heart is so pleased by your red shift reference, and I love the image a “inverse red shift” conjures! Just constantly being pulled closer and closer to the heart of God. Also, the direction this poem took honestly surprised me (in a good way!) and I had to stop and really think about if I believed God was “less than one breath away.” I’ve been having this tendency to tell myself he’s not, and that he’s shut himself off from me, when in reality, it’s just a lie that keeps me from coming to him. I guess in all, I really loved what you said through this poem and I thank you for reminding me of this beautiful truth I too often push away. ❤

    1. *very belatedly responds* I’m so glad you noticed the astronomy references and appreciated the idea of an inverse red shift—I wasn’t sure anyone would notice or get it. So thank you, you made my day. =D And I’m also glad that it was a good reminder. I totally think about God the same way, which is why I wrote this, to remind myself of the truth. I think Satan definitely doesn’t want us thinking God as being so close and turning to him. But God hems us in behind and before, like it says in Psalm 139. And his hand is always reaching out to us, like Jesus was to Peter when Peter tried to walk on water. ❤
